Fall in Massachusetts

The colors are changing, and we may likely be entering the most magical season that new England has to offer.

Before it gets too cold, we recommend taking advantage of the fall colors and some of the fun events happening this season. To help you make the most of the season, we've compiled a list of some of Massachusetts’ best autumn activities. So throw on your sweater and explore fall in Massachusetts.

Fall Foliage Tours

New England is renowned for its glorious fall colors. The leaves throughout our deciduous forests turn fiery reds, vibrant orange, and an array of yellows and golds. Mother nature really puts on a show.

You don't have to travel far for your foliage tour. Northwest of the city, you can enjoy rolling hills painted in autumn colors.

Another stunning Massachusetts foliage tour destination is the beautiful shoreline of Cape Cod. The red and yellow leaves are a stunning contrast to blue skies and sapphire water. It's the perfect opportunity for a weekend getaway from Boston. Enjoy your days strolling along the water and exploring any of the Cape's quaint villages. Book a small group day tour that will take you from Boston to Plymouth Rock and Cape Cod if you're looking for a more organized touring. Plan your trip from late September through early November for the best color display.

Apple Picking

One of the best-loved foods of fall is the apple. Whether it be a steaming cup of apple cider, baked apple crumble, or just a fresh and crisp granny smith. A day of apple picking is the perfect opportunity to take a breath and a step away from daily stresses.

Boston has several apple orchards that are within an hour's drive of the city.

  • Belkin Family Lookout Farm is about 17 miles from Boston and is one of the oldest working farms in the country. You can pick Asian pears, apples, and pumpkins. For kids, on the weekends there is face painting, animals, and a train ride. For adults, don’t miss the Taproom!

  • Connor's Farm is the winner when it comes to activities. So on top of apple picking, check out the corn maze, play pumpkin tetherball, or enjoy any of the other countless activities.

  • Brooksby Farm is a delight if you want to bring home more than just apples. Enjoy plenty of freshly baked goodies, including fudge, fresh pies, and doughnuts – and don't forget to bring some home as gifts.

Spooky Season

What is fall without some exciting Halloween celebrations? New England has a long spooky history which adds excitement to the season's activities.

Here are some of Boston’s best Halloween activities:

  • Haunted Salem, with its famous history of witch trials, is perfect for the Halloween enthusiast. Enjoy a tour of the Witch House or visit the Haunted Happenings Market.

  • Take a ride on Boston's Trolley of Terror to hear some stories of murders and executions and the chance to walk through some of the city's burial grounds.

  • Visit Barrett's Haunted Mansion for tons of scares. Then, upgrade for an inclusive dinner with the “Bite and Fright” special. Date night, anyone?

The city of Boston comes alive to enjoy the outdoors and fall ambiance before winter sets in. What activities will you be doing this season?
