Picking a Summer Vacation Spot: Destination Decisions in New England

Are you struggling to find the right summer vacation spot that isn’t too far from home?

With so many beautiful locations right at our doorstep, Massachusetts residents indeed face a delightful dilemma. How lucky are we?

Whether you want to stay local with Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, or Cape Cod or are ready for a bigger trip, there are plenty of options for a short or long vacation.

We'll guide you through picking a relaxing retreat, a family-friendly getaway, or an adventurous excursion close to home - exploring the enticing offerings of New England.

Maine

First on the list is the idyllic state of Maine, which tourists often overlook. Known for its stunning coastlines, Maine offers abundant natural beauty and is bursting with great food and adventure.

A favorite destination is the coastal town of Bar Harbor, which serves as a gateway to the picturesque Acadia National Park. Here, you can enjoy scenic drives, hiking, cycling, and kayaking. Seafood lovers will delight in the fresh lobsters and clams, making Maine a culinary voyage as well.

The Berkshires

In the opposite direction and right in our backyard, you'll find the Berkshires in western Massachusetts, famous for its inspiring landscapes and vibrant cultural scene.

The Berkshires is the perfect choice for a laid-back vacation. Here, you can immerse yourself in art, music, and theater. Visit the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, enjoy a concert at the Tanglewood Music Center, or take a peaceful walk through the Berkshire Botanical Garden.

If you want a little more activity, explore the area's hiking trails and get the chance to see the iconic Appalachian Trail. The Berkshires is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

Cape Cod

Cape Cod can't be missed if you want a beachside escape. The Cape offers beautiful beaches, charming lighthouses, and scenic bike paths that stretch on for miles. The Cape Cod National Seashore provides breathtaking views, wildlife sightings, and historical landmarks. Towns like Provincetown and Hyannis are known for their vibrant art communities, excellent dining, and plenty of seaside charm.

Boston

If a bustling city is more your pace, enjoy a staycation and head into the city of Boston, where there's never a lack of activities. Rich with history, architecture, and diverse neighborhoods to explore, Boston offers something for everyone. Be a tourist in our city and complete the Walk the Freedom Trail, enjoy a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, or savor delicious cuisine in the North End.

Rhode Island

Don’t overlook the tiny gem of Rhode Island. Newport, for example, offers unbelievable mansions, and a scenic cliff walk, and a thriving sailing culture.

The key to picking the perfect summer vacation spot near Massachusetts is understanding your personal preference. Are you looking for relaxation, adventure, culture, history, or a blend of it all? Whether it's the rustic charm of Maine to the beach life of Cape Cod, New England truly offers something for every traveler.
